The Center for Education Innovation (CEI) at HKUST is seeking a proactive, dedicated, and creative Instructional Designer to join our Technology-Enhanced Teaching team. This role focuses on designing innovative teaching strategies, especially in AI-enhanced pedagogy.
As AI rapidly transforms higher education, you will help faculty integrate AI-driven methods and tools into course design to enhance teaching and ultimately equip students with essential future skills. You will also critically analyse evidence to demonstrate the feasibility and impact of these innovations, ensuring they are cutting-edge, practical, and effective.
In addition to AI, you will support a range of proven active learning pedagogies, including blended learning, self-paced online learning (e.g., MOOCs), synchronous online learning, experiential learning, and immersive game-based learning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design Innovative Pedagogies: Collaborate with faculty to design and implement innovative teaching methods, leveraging AI and proven active learning pedagogies. The goal is to enhance learning outcomes, personalize learning, provide targeted feedback, foster critical thinking, and deepen student engagement through transformed course content, activities, and assessments.
- Guide Educational Media Production: Guide course teams in producing engaging educational media. This involves providing expertise on best practices for effective visual and auditory learning, assisting with script and storyboard development for various media formats, and advising on techniques and tools for efficiently creating interactive online content.
- Deliver Pedagogical Workshops: Design and deliver engaging workshops for faculty and teaching staff. These workshops will cover innovative instructional design principles, focusing on how to effectively integrate learning technologies and AI into teaching practices to scale learning impact across the university.
- Evaluate Innovation Impact: Critically collect and analyze evidence to demonstrate whether teaching innovations are feasible, practical and effective in achieving intended learning outcomes. Based on this analysis, provide constructive recommendations for further improvements.
- Contribute to Pedagogical Strategy: Help shape the university's strategy for AI-assisted teaching and learning and other emerging educational innovations. This includes providing insights for governance policy frameworks, establishing ethical guidelines, and planning scalable, university-wide implementation.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- A master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Learning Sciences, or a closely related discipline.
- A minimum of 5 years of solid work experience in instructional/learning design, higher education, or faculty development.
- Demonstrated expertise in instructional design, including identifying learning outcomes, applying adult learning principles, designing effective learning events and messages, utilizing instructional development models, and implementing robust formative and summative evaluation and assessment design principles.
- Hands-on experience with generative AI tools, LLM prompt engineering, and a strong understanding of ethical AI use in learning environments.
- Strong professional skills, encompassing project management, critical analysis, problem solving, excellent interpersonal abilities, and outstanding presentation and communication skills (both written and spoken).
- Proficiency in learning technologies and educational media production, including various edTech tools, Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas, a solid grasp of video production, and the ability to craft creative prototypes for content development.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is expected for effective collaboration within the university environment.
- Prior experience teaching within a higher education setting, offering valuable insight into the faculty and student experience.
