We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Senior Vice President, Counsel, Investments to join our Legal team. This role is located in Hong Kong.
As one of the safest and most trusted financial institutions, the BNY Legal department mitigates risk and handles legal affairs to ensure the security of the company and its clients. In addition to offering coverage to the BNY Investment’s business, BNY’s Legal department, has overall responsibility for government affairs and advises on advocacy and policy initiatives of the company to support BNY’s domestic and international operations, and they also support all investments, bank regulatory and supervisory issues.
In this role, you’ll make an impact in the following ways:
You will join a team of over 60 investment management legal professionals throughout US, Europe and Asia – in turn part of the global legal department of over 500 colleagues. Your role will be to support our APAC investment management business with a focus on the Japanese business, which has been identified as a strategic growth priority. As the client facing legal advisor, you will lead the legal support for that business developing effective relationships with senior executives to guide them as they look to develop their business offering.
In particular, your responsibilities will include:
- Provide day-to-day legal support to the central business team of the Japan entity as well as affiliated and external service providers.
- Serve as advisor to applicable APAC (with a focus on Japan and Cayman) governance committees that oversee fund investment activity and administrative operations.
- Draft and maintain documentation including trust instruments, fund declarations and client agreements.
- Work with Compliance in drafting, updating and applying policies and procedures for investment management, fund administration and distribution functions.
- Support for the Legal Department on key initiatives which span countries and disciplines outside of Japan and should the candidate wish to be challenged, outside of the Investment Management business This will at times include coordinating with regional/global colleagues and other stakeholders on time sensitive matters.
- Provide advice and assist in implementation of new product/service initiatives.

To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following:
- Advanced Legal Degree or local country equivalent degree usually required
- Progression to this level usually requires licensure/certification by the local country or jurisdiction
- 3-7 years minimum of total work experience as a qualified attorney is preferred (with exposure to Japanese investments / asset management industry a bonus)
- Strong written and oral communication skills in English (and Japanese a bonus)
- Prior corporate legal experience within the financial services industry or experience in assigned practice area (e.g., securities, employment, etc.) with an outside law firm is preferred .
