Job Description
About the position
This is business supporting and risk management role for the Life & Health business of PartnerRe in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The ideal candidate must be able to independently support the head of the function for not only managing day to day underwriting services but providing inputs for strategic plans for underwriting and successfully execute the strategies and proactively managing client relationship and engagement plans. The candidate should develop and / or support the delivery of innovative underwriting solutions to clients. The candidate should be able to multitask, contribute towards the growth of our business with prudence and due diligence and strive to enhance our footprint and technical expertise within the industry. In addition, the candidate should demonstrate strong customer-orientation, whilst maintaining a proactive and positive working relationship with clients, team members and cross functional colleagues.
Key responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day referrals across all lines of business including complex cases and claims re-underwriting while ensuring that the decisions are consistent, competitive and timely. Take ownership for the decisions and handle client queries and any technical negotiations independently.
- Develop client specific underwriting strategy for the markets assigned and support the identification, evaluation and execution of potential opportunities requested from business teams
- Proactively build deeper engagement with key clients, understand and ensure delivery of their product and underwriting servicing needs with best-in-class service standards. Organize regular client engagement activities such as meetings, webinars, workshops, client specific training initiatives, underwriting solutions to have a business impact
- Participate in the development and adaptation of the underwriting manual and operational manual to ensure that along with risk elements the changes reflect the market practices and expectations of APAC clients
- Work towards sharpening underwriting guidelines for specific client needs, understanding the requirements, research and coordination with CMO to develop and execute the underwriting guidelines to address client’s needs
- Lead or engage in underwriting or cross functional projects and process improvement initiatives (internal and external), new underwriting philosophy, guidelines or responsibilities
- Plan and lead client reviews including application form questions, non-medical limits, medical underwriting requirements
- Review and provide inputs to product design, policy provisions, treaties, underwriting guidelines, initiatives, campaigns, and related requests in a timely manner to help develop business
- Provide advice to pricing teams, medical literature review, and relevant statistical research to assist with assumptions setting, product pricing, and development of new pricing bases
- Enhance Partner Re’s footprint in APAC by engaging in industry associations and contribute to building the PartnerRe brand by active engagement in external and internal conferences and forums, publishing articles
- Training and coaching any new joiners in the team and engaging in peer review to maintain quality services
- Travel as per business requirements
Qualifications
Technical skills
- Have extensive Life (re)insurance technical underwriting expertise and have experience in handling complex and comprehensive mortality, critical illness, ABD, disability benefits
- Have a strong understanding of products across group and retail markets, including good understanding of underwriting practices, especially across the ANZ market. Having experience of the APAC market will be an added advantage
- Are resourceful in developing and delivering underwritings training, providing technical input to product quotes, conducting underwriting and portfolio reviews, and excited with taking unique underwriting solutions to clients
- Understand the market regulatory and business framework and are able to provide inputs to business and pricing teams
- Proficiency in written and oral English is a must
- Chinese language capabilities will be an added advantage

- Knowledge of Life and Health reinsurance business and proposition
- Strategic thinking with strong analytical skills and problem-solving ability
- High degree of client orientation
- Self-motivated and driven to identify client needs, plan, develop, coordinate and execute the initiatives independently and proactively
- Are a team player while being curious and have a real desire to contribute to a high-performing team to help the business unit achieve great success together
- Have excellent influencing, negotiation, and presentation skills
- Fluency in spoken and written English is a must; Chinese language skills will be advantageous
Work experience
- 15 years’ or more of Life (re)insurance experience underwriting complex mortality and living benefits with experience in ANZ market
Education
- University Degree, preferably in Medicine, Life Sciences or Finance
Professional qualification
- Professional qualifications in life insurance underwriting or insurance industry (e.g. FLMI, FALU, ACII)
