The Role
We are looking for a junior cataloguer to support the auction production process. The ideal candidate will have a strong appreciation for fine arts, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple aspects of sale preparation.
Responsibilities:
- Conducts in-depth research on the authenticity, historical context, bibliographies and exhibition/literature records of artworks/artists
- Produces and formats catalogue entries and supporting materials for sales
- Helps with condition checks, prepares and writes condition reports
- Crafts engaging artwork essays and tailored digital content while maintaining brand standards
- Assists in sale pre and post-sale materials, including proposals, client presentations, and market reports
- Oversees artwork photography process such as scheduling and production
- Maintains vendor relationships with conservators, framers, and other art professionals
- Conducts market research relevant to pricing strategies and valuation assessments
- Stays informed on market trends, collector activity, and industry development
- Supports specialists and departments heads throughout auction production to ensure seamless operations
- Help in liaising with supporting departments, including catalogue production, marketing, press and operations
- Assist with compilation and proof-reading of catalogue texts and all sale-related materials
- To assist in providing a comprehensive level of service to Sotheby’s clients, e.g. providing exemplary levels of service both verbally and in written communication and responding swiftly and accurately to enquiries
Skills & Requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Prior internship or professional experience in a relevant field (auctions, galleries, or art research/journalism preferred).
- Possess some Contemporary Art knowledge and/or experience.
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Native in English and Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese)
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities under deadlines
- Keen attention to detail and accuracy
- Discretion in handling confidential information
- Adept in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and adaptability to internal systems
- Team-oriented attitude and collaborative mindset
- Passion for fine arts and strong business acumen
- Thrives in fast-paced environments with proactive problem-solving
