Senior Director, Quality Assurance
The Senior Director of Quality Assurance at Manulife is responsible for driving the quality engineering strategy and ensuring the highest standards of product quality for life insurance applications. This role oversees quality engineering activities across multiple portfolios and domains, ensuring the quality and reliability of our business (insurance) and software products. The incumbent will lead and manage a team of quality and test engineers who design, develop, and maintain automated test suites. By collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve quality issues, conduct code reviews, and propose solutions to mitigate quality-related risks, the Senior Director of Quality Assurance will also establish and monitor quality standards, metrics, and leading practices to drive continuous improvement in software development processes and products.
By guiding the strategic direction of quality assurance, this role ensures compliance with established standards, thereby maintaining exceptional quality in all deliverables. Furthermore, this role will be instrumental in mitigating risks associated with software failures that could jeopardize Manulife’s reputation or lead to regulatory challenges, thereby reinforcing the organization’s technological integrity.
Position Responsibilities:
1. Application Development and Support:-
Lead and manage a team of quality engineers to develop and implement quality engineering practices and automated test suites.
Oversee the quality engineering activities across multiple portfolios and domains, ensuring the quality and reliability of software products.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve quality issues, conduct code reviews, and propose solutions to mitigate quality-related risks.
Establish and monitor quality standards, metrics, and leading practices to drive continuous improvement of software development processes and products.
Develop and implement strategies for end-to-end testing and automation to enhance the overall quality and reliability of software products.
Ensure that all quality engineering activities are aligned with the organization's goals and objectives.
Establish and adhere to DevSecOps practices to maximize automation and continuous delivery practices, including comprehensive regression test automation.
Maintain systems development standards, patterns and ensure compliance.
Apply change management principles where appropriate in the IT process to effectively deliver solutions.
Ensure IT operational SLA compliance and operational efficiency of IT processes in support of business goals.
Define and promote software engineering quality standards.
Collaborate with fellow Quality Engineering Leads in the region to build an exciting and innovative culture within the teams across Manulife Asia.
Contribute to the reuse of digital technology, solutions & skills to achieve cost efficiencies utilizing Agile, DevSecOps, repeatable technical playbooks and collaborative IT process automation practices.
Open to travel within Asia Region.
Join the leadership team of BU as representative of quality assurance, and key contributor of quality governance.
Drive innovation and continuous improvement in the quality assurance delivery especially by adopting GenAI.
2. People Development/Leadership:-
Provide strategic leadership to agile delivery squads, guiding them to implement robust quality practices aligned with Manulife’s standards, ensuring reliable applications and enhanced team performance.
Lead cross-training and upskilling programs for quality engineers, building expertise in automation and AI-driven testing to drive improvement and maintain Manulife’s competitive edge.
Oversee onboarding and mentorship of new team members, using structured programs to ensure they meet quality standards, fostering a cohesive, high-performing team.
Coach Hong Kong and Macau quality engineers to support Manulife’s Technology Transformation, promoting innovative practices to enhance capabilities and global competitiveness.
3. Accountability Overview:-
Individual Accountabilities:
Formulate and execute a quality assurance strategy to ensure consistent software excellence and reliability for all projects in Hong Kong.
Mentor and develop quality engineering teams, cultivating expertise and innovation to advance Manulife’s digital objectives in Hong Kong.
Shared Accountabilities:
Engage with Manulife’s global and regional IT framework to address quality challenges, ensuring solutions align with enterprise goals.
Partner with Hong Kong IT stakeholders to define and track quality metrics, fostering continuous improvement and operational efficiency.
Required Qualifications:
A minimum of 15 years of experience in designing, developing, and testing integrated digital solutions.
Proven leadership experience, with a track record of managing and leading large teams.
Strong knowledge of quality assurance methodologies, tools, and processes.
Extensive experience with automation testing tools and frameworks.
Experience in delivering projects from inception through to post-implementation warranty using Agile DevSecOps project delivery methodologies.
Experience in delivering projects involving stakeholders from multiple locations
Solid understanding of software delivery processes and tools (i.e. distributed version control systems, CI/CD).
Functional understanding of cloud services (Azure, AWS, GCP, AliCloud).
Recognize the importance of high-quality code through non-negotiables like unit tests, integration/acceptance tests, performant, secure.
Insurance industry knowledge is seen as advantageous.
Ensure programming best practices & quality gates are followed
Ability to drive new technology analysis & discussion
Ability to deliver under high pressure
Ensure application integrity as product roadmap & business requirements.

Proven track record of developing applications using Agile methodology.
Passionate about software engineering.
Developed applications for a large number of users and effectively addressed the challenges this presents.
Possesses a solid understanding of design patterns, including when and why to apply them.
Approaches work in a structured and logical manner, refraining from adopting new technologies without a comprehensive understanding.
Has prior experience establishing patterns for other engineers to follow and providing mentorship to the broader team.
